The product is combined with six botanical extracts such as He Shou Wu (Polygonum Multiflorum Root Extract), Ginseng (Panax Ginseng Root Extract), Dong Quai (Angelica Polymorpha Sinensis Root Extract), Anemarrhena ( Anemarrhena Asphodeloides Root Extract), Ginger Root and Biota Leaf.
In addition, it reveals what is not in the product, which are PPD, Ammonia, Parabens, Phthalates, Mineral Oil and Formaldehyde Donors.
The First Impressions
The first impression I had with the product was quite good to say. I was marveled by the way the package arrived the house. Just the way I am impressed by the delivery, I found the simple way of using the hair dye shampoo like any other hair shampoo – apply to dry hair and leave on for 15 minutes while the color develops, thereafter, rinse thoroughly till it is cleared.
As for the mess free claim, I discovered the smell from the shampoo was quite different from the traditional hair dye. It was not strong in the nose. However, the zero stain was not really true when she applied the product. She left the bathroom with the dye stain. While it was not hard to clean, I considered such claim to be overhyped by the product.
The Test
My wife’s hair falls below her collar bone with a thick hair texture, but not excessively long or thick. When she applied the hair dye shampoo, her first observation was the amount of product required. She did not even use 2 pumps to cover the roots, which she barely had enough to properly soak the rest of my hair. I believe this is worth considering if you have medium to longer hair length as PearWood claims to be a fast and easy way to color your hair.
She applied the shampoo to her scalp and left it on for 25 minutes, instead of the 15 minutes stated. Once she washed it off completely until the water was clear, the hair was definitely rougher than soft. Then, she used the regular conditioner for about 1 minute and rinsed. To her surprise, she saw the brown stain on her towel. For her, she was not expecting such a product to be advertised as an easy, mess free hair-color.
What Worked for Her
Some evidence of colour deposition was noticed. Not all that effective, though, given that her grey look whitish after application. But the alteration was a subtle one. I would say it is more of a colour refresh than that I expected to see the same amount of gray coverage that I was looking for.
Drawbacks with PearWood Hair Shampoo
I am not sure what was the worst thing but her gray hair was very obvious. So the lack of coverage on those gray roots had to be a factor in my purchase of PearWood. If you are expecting it to completely cover the stubborn gray roots, then I would reserve my hopes for something like a traditional permanent hair dye.
There was staining as well. She had stained her nail and cuticles after using the product although it was said that it is not supposed to stain hands. For this, she attempted to get rid of the color with a nail brush and cuticle stick and it did take some extra effort. The other thing that reminded me that it is not as mess-free as I hoped was the brown colored stain on the towel.
When using the product, kindly wear disposable gloves and keep items from getting stained.
Is PearWood Hair Dye Worth Buying?
PearWood Hair Color Shampoo might seem like a cheap alternative to salon hair visits or normal hair dye. The true value will depend on the amount of product required and its ability to provide its primary use. My wife needed about 2 pumps to cover her entire roots and the grey coverage was still minimal.
The value is not as convincing when she consider that she needed to use additional conditioner to soften the hair after rinsing. For her, she does not see it as a clear cut bargain to spend money on a product that will need a lot more product but will only slightly diminish the look of gray hair. Having tried it I would not be in a rush to buy another bottle.
Who is PearWood Best for?
If you are just seeking a temporary colour update, I think PearWood is worth considering, as opposed to full gray. For example, someone with less gray hair or a shorter cut may not have the same experience as someone with more gray or longer hair and may require less product.
If your primary intention is to totally but effectively hide visible or persistent gray roots, however, then I would have my expectations set low. I would also suggest to wear gloves when applying the product and be prepared for staining, even if it seems mess-free.
Verdict
The PearWood Hair Color Shampoo is captivating when you see its promises, but the experience from my wife does not match the grey coverage promise. Using the product is quite easy, however, to get the result you are looking for, you will need to get more of it as one bottle may not be enough.
My parting word is that the product should not be a total replacement for traditional hair dye.
